Recount: Marshmallow Challenge

Task description: This week we have been learning how to create a recount and adding lots of detail to our writing. We had to complete an activity at our tables called the marshmallow challenge. I didn’t really want to help my group so I just watched. After the experience we had to write a recount about creating the tower, check out my recount below. Please leave a positive comment on my blog.

Today my table had to do a challenge. We had to make a marshmallow structure with spaghetti. I barely helped my group and I just watched them make it but it kept on falling down. But then they eventually got it to stand up. They tried to make it go taller by adding the spaghetti into the marshmallow and making it sturdy.

We had to work as a team even though I didn’t. All I did was just watch them trying to make it get taller and taller to the point we were the highest tower. We were given 20 pieces of spaghetti and 10 marshmallows. I just wanted to eat the marshmallows but we had to at least try to make a tower.

Everyone at my table had lots of ideas and didn’t even listen to each other. That’s why I didn’t help. I just watched them argue and try to build a tower that kept on falling over.

My table did manage to make a tower but we had to make it stand up against the wall which is kind of cheating. It was fun to watch my table try and build the tallest tower.

Vanilla Ice Cream

Task Description: This week in room 10 we had been learning all about ice cream. For this task we had to make ice cream by using different materials to create a vanilla ice cream. After that I then had to write instructions to make ice cream. Check out my instructions below:

  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ cup salt
  • 4 cups ice cubes
Equipment
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • 1 x medium sized snap lock
  • 1 x large sized snap lock bag
Instructions
  1. First you need to open your medium sized bag
  2. Then pour ½ cup cream into the bag.
  3. Then added a tablespoon of sugar to the same bag.
  4. Finally add half a teaspoon of vanilla to the bag.
  5. Seal up the medium sized bag.
  6. Open up the large bag
  7. Add in half a cup of salt

  9. Put the medium sized bag inside the large bag and seal it tight.
  10. Use a tea towel to help shake the bag for 10 minutes without stopping.
  11. Open up the large bag and take the medium sized bag out.
  12. Scoop some ice cream into a cup and try it out.

Scientific Method

Scientific Method

WALT: safely conduct an experiment and explain the process and results using the scientific method.
This week we are going to conduct a science experiment using the scientific method to write up the results.  Use the class brainstorm from the jam board if you need extra help.

Question

What are you trying to find out?

Will it dissolve in water?
Hypothesis

What do you think will happen?

Salt – no

Pepper – yes

Sugar – yes

Oil – yes

Oats – no

Sprinkles – no

Materials

What will you need to do the experiment?

You will need:

  • Six cups
  • A pen or pencil
  • Sprinkles
  • Oats
  • Sugar
  • Pepper
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Measuring cups
  • Paper

ProcedureWhat steps will you take to do the experiment?
  1. First you need to have six cups and label each of the cups what you will be putting in them.
  2. Add a teaspoon of one of the ingredients into the labelled cup.
  3. Do step 2 for each of the cups adding oil, salt, sprinkles, pepper, sugar and oats to each of the cups.
  4. Add ¼ cup of water to each of the cups
  5. Using the spoon stir the ingredients
  6. Watch and see if they dissolve.
Results

What happened during the experiment?

Ingredient Dissolved Did not dissolve
Oil
Sugar
Pepper
Salt
Sprinkles
Oats
Conclusion

What did you find out? Was your prediction correct?

My prediction was kind of correct. I thought that the sugar would dissolve and it did. I thought that the pepper and oil would dissolve in the water but it did not. The oil kind of just mixed in with the water and you could still see it so it didn’t really dissolve. I said that the salt would not dissolve and it did. I was correct about the oats and the sprinkles they did not dissolve. I found the oil and sprinkles really interesting to watch. The sprinkles lost their colour but did not dissolve completely.

Year 5 and 6 Camp Recount

Task description: A few weeks ago we had year 5 and 6 camp on our school field. This week for writing we had to create a recount about our camp experience. Check out my camp experience below:

Two weeks ago on Wednesday we had a year 5 and 6 camp. We had 5 camp groups and they were all called Weka, Tui, Piwakawaka, Kea, Pūkeko and Ruru. We all did activities each day we were there. We were only there for 3 days. On Wednesday my first activity was kayaking. It was really fun. At first I thought I was going to struggle at kayaking. But I later found out when I was in the boat that it wasn’t that bad. It was really fun and I also went pretty far away. The next activity I did was cooking. We made scones. We used a lot of sugar and we used the sugar to make some dough. We put some flower on the dough and then we rolled it up and then we got cups to make shapes and then we put it in the oven. While it was baking we went into the hall to play some games. The games they had were volleyball, tennis, table tennis and we got to use scooters. When the scones finished cooking we had to go to our school kitchen to get our scones. When I got my scones I got a plastic knife and then I cut it in half and then we got butter and then we spread it on the scones. When we finished cooking we went back to the field where all our tents were and then we went back under the big marquee. We had to get dressed in our togs because we were going to Point England pools and we went there for a little swim and a shower. After we went back we all went into different rooms to watch a movie. Luckily the room I was in was the room all my friends were in. The movie we watched was called Over the moon. Once we finished the movie we went back to our tents and it was my first time sleeping in a tent away from my family. The next day all the kids woke up so early and we were all screaming to each other from our tents. We got out of our tents and went straight under the marquee . Once all the camp groups were under the marquee we all got our breakfast and we got some hot chocolate but the hot chocolate tasted yucky. Later that day we went to a activity called killerzone. Basically killerzone was a competition against 2 teams to see which was the best. I had the best time at year 5 and 6 camp and I can’t wait to do it all again next year.

Blue whale

Blue whales are the largest whale to ever existed. Its as long as about three school busses and as heavy as 15 school  busses. Blue whales even out size the dinosaurs . the whales marine habitat contributes to their exceptional size. The ocean provides more room to grow and eliminates one of the factors that usually hinder animal size. Whales from new zealand are usually found next to auckland, wellington and christchurch. The oldest whale to ever live was 110 years old. A blue whales age can be determined by its earwax. About every six month a new layer of earwax forms inside a whale’s ear canal  the wax primarily serves to

Spy mouse

Once upon a time there was a little mouse. He was very hungry and wanted some cheese. The problem was the cheese he wanted was on a mouse trap. He was very disappointed because he was looking forward to eating the cheese. The mouse tried to grab it off the mouse trap but he was worried if the mouse trap would activate. The mouse tried all sorts of different moves to get the cheese off the mouse trap but he was nervous the mouse trap would activate. There was one last move the mouse did not try and that was deploying from the sky. He grabbed all his mouse buddies and he got them to go on to the roof and deploy him from the ceiling off the house. His buddies wrapped some pieces of rope around his arms and his legs and then the mouse jumped off the ceiling and he landed perfectly next to the mouse trap. Mouse wanted them to lower him down a bit more but his friends did not hear him. Mouse reached down and picked up the cheese and his buddies saw he picked it up so they raised him back up but there was one problem. The rope was ripping off. Mouse was so scared he was going to fall and his friends did not even realise. Finally he made it back to the top with the cheese in his hands but moused realised that the mousetrap wasn’t even activated. Mouse was embarrassed and his friends laughed at him and they all shared the cheese together. The End.
